The mineral water study by Stiftung Warentest shows: The price is not always a decisive factor for the quality.
Products from Edeka and dm perform poorly.
Munich – Many people like to drink tap water because it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly than bottled water.
But here too, prices could rise in the future.
In addition, tap water can be unhealthy under certain circumstances.
So it's better to grab water from the supermarket?
Numerous brands and offers range from cheap to the upper price segment.
A test by Stiftung Warentest of 29 natural mineral waters of the Medium variety shows: regardless of the price, not all of them are convincing.

The test includes seven mineral waters in the reusable glass bottle, seven in the reusable plastic container and 15 waters in the most environmentally harmful disposable plastic bottle.
The price ranges also differed greatly.
The most expensive water “Bio Kristall” costs 1.45 euros per liter, while the cheapest ones from Lidl and Edeka only cost 18 cents per liter.
To get one thing straight: the two cheapest waters differed significantly.
Because while one received the top grade, the other completed the test as a loser.
Drinking a lot is healthy.
But not all mineral water is the same.
Stiftung Warentest has taken a closer look at some of them.

While some test products had a very slight off smell, the majority of the mineral water had no defects in taste or smell.
Only the “Ivorell” water from dm showed deficiencies in taste.
The reason: Substances from the bottle material have passed into the water.

Ina Bockholt from Stiftung Warentest explained in the program

: “On the one hand, we detected comparatively high levels of acetaldehyde, and what we also found were very low levels of benzene.” Benzene is classified as carcinogenic “and has In our opinion, it has no place in water that, like that of dm, is classified for the preparation of infant formula,” says Bockholt.

When checking environmental toxins, only Globus mineral water showed errors.

Since the findings are in the nanogram range, this has no health consequences.
“However, the findings indicate that something is wrong, for example with the well or the extraction process,” warned goods tester Bockholt.

Lidl's “Saskia” water was convincing in the test with a grade of “Very good”.
On the other hand, the water from Edeka, like the contaminated water “Ivorell” from dm, received the grade “sufficient”.
This makes them the two losers of the test.
Reason for the poor rating of Edeka water: incorrect information about the minerals it contains.
Criticism of Lidl water because of environmental protection: “It’s a fairy tale”
Nevertheless, there is also criticism of Lidl water.
The reason: Lidl advertises packaging made from 100 percent recycled material.
Environmentalists criticize this. Thomas Fischer from German Environmental Aid explains to

: “In every recycling cycle, up to five percent of material is lost, which has to be replenished with new material from other sources.” A bottle that is made of 100 percent recycled plastic , so it cannot exist.
“It’s a fairy tale,” says Fischer.
In general, water in reusable bottles was rated better in the test than water from disposable bottles.
So not only are they more environmentally friendly, they are also better.
