A wolf causes excitement in the Cuxhaven district.

The animal runs across the street in the middle of a residential area.

But how does he get there and how do you behave when you meet him?

In Beverstadt, near Bremen, a wolf was filmed running through a housing estate.

According to t-online,

there is a primary school nearby

, as well as a retirement home and a playground.

Wolf expert Hermann Kück confirmed the sighting to the

Nordsee Zeitung

and expressed concern.

Although wolves have been spotted more often due to the neighboring wolf territories, in this case the circumstances are different due to the nearby facilities.

The time of day, “early in the morning, when he could also meet children,” also worries Kück.

Five-second video shows Wolf in the middle of the residential area

The video recording of the encounter with the predator only lasts five seconds and yet leaves many people in an uproar.

It shows the wolf first running along a footpath and finally turning onto a street towards a residential area.

According to

t-online,

a heated debate broke out on social networks in light of the sighting: “While many are now worried about their children and pets, others are impressed by the recordings and point out that the wolf was more rushed and stressed than dangerous for residents.”

How does the wolf find its way into populated environments?

As the

Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection

informs, wolves are naturally cautious towards humans and would avoid direct encounters.

Most of the time the animals would avoid people.

Contact between humans and predators is also rare in wolf territories.

According to Nabu, in the past 20 years, in which humans and wolves have again shared living space in Germany, not a single wolf has approached humans in an aggressive manner.

But just like other wild animals, the wolf also has to live with the fact that settlements are now shaping its habitat.

It could therefore happen that the animals have to walk past or occasionally through residential areas.

However, due to the wolves' night and twilight activity, this would mainly occur in the dark.

This could also explain the early sighting in Beverstadt.

Similar to foxes, deer or wild boars, wolves can occasionally be seen in populated areas during the day.

Attacks by wolves on people are rare.

In the event of an attack, three reasons are usually decisive: rabies, provocative behavior on the part of humans or food conditioning, i.e. “the connection of human facilities with available food,” as the

Austrian Center for Bear, Wolf, Luchs

writes.

How do you behave correctly when you encounter a wolf?

Now that, according to Nabu

, wolves

are slowly reclaiming their old habitats in Germany, more and more people are asking themselves how to behave properly if they encounter a wolf.

You should definitely know and observe the following rules:

  • Be quiet and keep your distance if possible.

If you want to increase the distance, you should do so facing the animal, as

    Nabu NRW

    informs.

  • Under no circumstances should you attract the animals, for example with food.

Do not attempt to touch or chase wolves.

  • If the wolf doesn't retreat or you have a bad feeling, clap your hands or speak to him loudly.

  • Don't run away.

This could trigger persecution behavior in the wolf.

Stand still and observe the situation.

  • If the wolf approaches, you should still stop and stand tall.

Also take a step towards the animal.

This is how you intimidate him.

  • If a wolf and dog meet despite being on a leash, the proximity of the owner is

the best protection for the dog, according to

the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection .

“Even in these situations, there is no danger for the dog handler.” If you encounter a predator, you should call your dog to you, put him on a leash and then calmly retreat.

If the wolf continues to show interest, make yourself known by calling.

Throwing objects can also cause the wolf to retreat.

  • Encounters with wolves and sightings should always be reported to the wolf management of the respective federal state.
