A short film by Malia Ann.
If her middle name appears in the credits, the director of “The Heart”, presented at the Sundance festival, is none other than Malia Obama.
The daughter of Michelle and Barack Obama was invited to the red carpet this Thursday to ensure the presentation of this project, written and produced by her.
The short film will be screened among a selection of films during the prestigious festival, which runs until January 28 in Utah.
“We hope that this film will make you feel a little less alone or, at least, that it will remind you not to forget those who are,” teased Malia Obama via a video published by the Sundance Institute.
She presents “The Heart” as “a kind of fable,” that of a son “mourning the death of his mother after she made an unusual request of him in her will.”
Already rewarded
“This film is about lost objects, lonely people, forgiveness, regret, but I think it strives to reveal where tenderness and complicity can be found in these things,” explains Malia Ann.
Graduating from Harvard in 2021, the 25-year-old artist is nevertheless not her first attempt.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the short film has already screened in Telluride, as well as at the Chicago International Film Festival, where it won in the category of best live action short film.
The eldest daughter of the former US president entered Hollywood via an internship on the series “Girls”
by Lena Dunham in 2015. She also co-wrote an episode of “Swarm”, produced by Donald Glover for Prime Video.
The creators of the series praised the young woman's influence.
She seems well on her way to following in the footsteps of her parents, whose production company collaborates with Netflix.
