Actually, a man just wanted to get something to snack in a supermarket.

But he couldn't complete the purchase at the checkout.

Because of a detail.

Iserlohn – According to the law, anyone who wants to buy cigarettes or alcohol must be of legal age.

If there is any doubt, you will be asked for ID at the supermarket checkout.

Many people have probably experienced this before.

In middle age, however, an ID check like this probably happens rarely.

A 44-year-old father from Iserlohn was very surprised when he couldn't pay at the self-service checkout when buying something in a supermarket.

“The self-service checkout didn’t let us go today.

“Not without proof of legal age,” he reported on the strange situation on the short message service X (formerly Twitter).

He didn't have wine, schnapps or a few cigarettes over the scanner - but something to snack on.

More specifically, a bar of chocolate.

“We bought rum, grape and nut chocolate,” the supermarket customer explained in more detail.

The X users are visibly amused in the comments: "As if a teenager would eat something like that" or "I didn't know that the chocolate was age restricted."

The Youth Protection Act also applies to sweets containing alcohol

Do you really have to provide proof of age for chocolate?

Basically not, only under certain conditions or for some types of chocolate.

The Youth Protection Act also applies to sweets that contain alcohol.

Of course, the self-service checkout cannot distinguish which person is currently making the purchase.

And whether it is old enough for products that are affected by child protection.

The purchase must then be approved manually by the staff.

Paragraph nine of the Youth Protection Act states: “In restaurants, sales outlets or other public places, alcoholic drinks or foods that contain other alcoholic drinks in more than just small quantities may neither be given to children and young people nor may they be permitted to consume them.”

ID required when buying sweets in the supermarket – “I wasn’t allowed to buy tiramisu when I was in my early 20s

In the comments under the tweet, some users reported similar situations.

“I had that recently with rum balls.

Can understand your confusion,” one woman wrote.

Someone else added: "I wasn't allowed to buy tiramisu once in my early 20s because I didn't have ID with me."

However, the decisive factor in classifying to whom the delicacies can be sold is not the quantity of alcohol, but rather the quality.

Here it depends on the listed ingredients.

If it contains high-proof alcohol such as schnapps, only adults are allowed to eat the product.

The chocolate buyer's idea to solve this problem in the future: "Can't an AI distinguish 44-year-olds from 17-year-olds?"

Meanwhile, another user had a completely different thought: “It’s crazy that someone would actually buy this variety.” As the saying goes: tastes are different.

This was also recently demonstrated in the case of vegan chocolates that a Rewe customer bought.
