In the pot or outdoors, the wisteria (Wisteria) is rightly a very popular plant with its lush flower spikes.

Each species has special properties.

Wisteria, also known as wisteria, has been named poisonous plant of the year 2024 by the Wandsbek Botanical Garden.

All parts of wisteria are very poisonous to humans and animals.

But this is almost the only flaw of the plant, whose around ten species enrich the home garden very attractively and thus make up for all its toxicity.

With its blue or white, delicately scented flower clusters, the climbing plant gives gardens and house facades a very romantic charm from April to June - with the right pruning, some varieties bloom a second time in late summer.

Flower color, winter hardiness or suitability as a pot plant – what is particularly important to you if you want to plant a wisteria in your garden or on the balcony?

Which wisteria blooms white?

The Japanese wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) stands out with its white-flowering varieties 'Shiro-noda' or 'Longissima Alba'.

The Chinese wisteria (Wisteria sinensis) 'Alba' and the American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens) 'Nivea' are also well-known white varieties.

The silk wisteria variety 'Shiro Kapitan Fuji' (Wisteria brachybotrys) flowers white-pink.

Which wisteria is particularly hardy?

If you live in a region where it gets very frosty in winter, the American wisteria (Wisteria macrostachya var. frutescens) 'Blue Moon' is recommended - the variety is said to be able to cope with temperatures down to minus 40 degrees Celsius.

But the other wisteria species are also hardy down to around minus 20 degrees, but are sensitive to late frosts or very severe temperatures below zero.

Winter protection definitely makes sense for young specimens and potted plants.

Low-growing varieties of American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens), which are “only” six to around ten meters high, are suitable for growing in pots.

The variety 'Amethyst Falls' has an intense scent, the flowers of 'Nivea' are decorated with a yellow dot.

Ultimately, other species also grow in pots, but then more slowly than in the open field.

The bucket should have a volume of at least 200 liters and a height and width of at least 40 centimeters.

Regular pruning is necessary.

Which wisteria variety has the most magnificent flowers?

Of all the wisteria species, the large wisteria (Wisteria floribunda 'Macrobotrys') produces the longest flower clusters.

This is clearly the large wisteria (Wisteria floribunda) 'Macrobotrys', whose purple flowers are 30 to 100 centimeters long.

In late summer it even shows another delicately scented bloom.

But the white-flowering Japanese wisteria 'Longissima Alba' also has flower panicles up to 40 centimeters long.

Which wisteria has the longest flowering period?

Of course, the flowering time depends to a large extent on an ideal location and proper care, such as regular pruning.

Many varieties can bloom twice a year, so keep this in mind when purchasing if that is important to you.

The American wisteria (Wisteria frutescens), for example the variety 'Longwood Purple', is considered to have a particularly long flowering period and, under good conditions, shows flowers from May to August.
