A passer-by is amazed at circular holes in the street.

They're not potholes.

It's not just him who is surprised by its actual benefits.

Kassel – If there are bumps while driving on the road, a pothole is often to blame.

The unwanted holes in the road are a thorn in the side of drivers and communities because they are annoying and repairing them involves immense costs.

However, there are also holes in the asphalt that are intentional.

An attentive passerby found this out when he shared a photo of two mysterious holes on the Internet.

The man posted his find on the Reddit internet forum.

You can see two strange holes in the asphalt of the road.

He asks the question: “What are these holes in the road surface for?” The answer didn’t take long to arrive.

Circular holes in the road – forum user clears up mystery

One user apparently knows his stuff and comments: “These are measuring holes.

The commissioning authority tests whether the road construction work was carried out properly.

There must be compacted base layers and a certain pavement thickness.”

But he isn't thrilled about the existence of the holes either.

He goes on to explain that he often comes across holes like this when he's out on his bike: "It really annoys me because the things are never closed properly and as a cyclist you get a nasty hit when you ride through them."

Even if the holes in the asphalt are intentional, they still cause little enthusiasm among forum members.

There is little enthusiasm for the mysterious holes in the asphalt - cyclists and motorcyclists complain

He's not the only one.

Even motorcyclists complain about the inconvenience these holes cause them.

For example, one user reports: “They also annoy me on the motorcycle when you have chosen a nice line, look further ahead and then, if necessary, drive through both.

That irritates me sometimes.”

An exchange of ideas in the community also revolves around the cost and effectiveness of this method.

A user wonders whether it wouldn't be more cost-effective to have a specialist present during construction work to monitor proper execution and thus not only ensure the quality of road construction, but also minimize the annoyance of road users.
