“Barbie” at the 2024 Oscars: how Greta Gerwig, nugget of independent cinema, became queen in Hollywood

She has every chance of appearing in several categories, including best director, best screenplay, best music... All this since last July and thanks to the most famous doll in the world who became the heroine of her film, "Barbie", with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, among other stars.

A work of global success, which allowed the 40-year-old filmmaker to become the first director to exceed a billion dollars at the global box office - in France, more than 5.8 million spectators celebrated throughout film, second most viewed of the year 2023. That is to say “the biggest success of the year in the world, a phenomenon film that we had not anticipated, it was the public who made it…” underlines Olivier Snanoudj, “senior vice-president of cinema distribution” in France at Warner, the studio which distributed “Barbie”.

And a card with exceptional consequences for the filmmaker: in November, the Cannes Festival chose her to be president of the jury for its next edition.
