Smart electricity meters will be mandatory for certain households from 2025.

So-called smart meters collect data on electricity consumption.

Households will face some changes in 2024.

New deadlines, rules or standards apply to heaters, fire extinguishers and smoke detectors.

But that's not all, because from 2025 certain households will have to switch to new electricity meters.

These changes are determined by the law to restart the digitalization of the energy transition.

In households and companies, old electricity meters are to be replaced across the board by digital or intelligent electricity meters by 2032.

So-called smart meters are becoming mandatory for some households.

These are intelligent electricity meters, as “Chip” explains.

Smart meters will be mandatory for certain households in Germany from 2025

According to the “Consumer Center”, smart meters store the household’s electricity consumption.

The collected data is then sent to, among other things, the electricity provider and network operator.

The change will begin in 2025 and will be mandatory for certain households:

  • Installation obligation when using controllable consumption devices (this includes, for example, heat pumps or night storage heaters)

  • Installation is mandatory if electricity consumption exceeds 6,000 kWh per year

  • Installation obligation when using photovoltaic systems with an installed output of 7 kW or more

Installation of intelligent electricity meters – specifications for smart meters

The government has clear guidelines for installing smart meters.

At least 20 percent of listed households must be upgraded by the end of 2025, at least 50 percent by the end of 2028, and at least 95 percent by the end of 2030.

Households that do not yet need to install a smart meter but would like to can receive a device from the responsible metering point operator.

A measuring point operator is the responsible company that installs and maintains the smart meter.

There is a fundamentally responsible measuring point operator, this is required by law.

This is usually the local network operator.
