Covid-19 hospitalizations and intensive care admissions in the last month have grown by 40% and 13% respectively on a monthly basis on a global scale.

New cases, however, are stable, although heavily underestimated.

These are some of the data that emerge from the latest WHO Covid bulletin.

According to the report, from 11 December to 7 January there were 1.1 million cases diagnosed in the world with a +4% compared to the previous month and 8,700 deaths (-26%).

Almost all cases are recorded in the European and Western Pacific Regions of the WHO.

The numbers, however, refer only to a part of the WHO member states (about half for cases and a quarter for deaths).

The relaxation of surveillance also weighs heavily on states that regularly communicate data to the WHO.

“According to estimates obtained from wastewater surveillance, clinical case detection underestimates the true burden by 2 to 19 times,” the WHO writes.

However, there were 173 thousand hospitalizations and 1,900 admissions to intensive care (the data refers to approximately 50 states).

Among the variants, JN.1 is now dominant.

Its presence is confirmed in 71 countries and represents 65.5% of the sequences analyzed.
