More and more deceptive packages are appearing in supermarkets and discounters.
A well-known manufacturer was particularly bold in 2023.
Kassel - The Hamburg consumer advice center (vzhh) regularly selects the deceptive package of the month to point out particularly bold tricks from manufacturers.
The deceptive package of 2023 has now been chosen by consumers themselves - with a clear winner.
The deceptive package of the year became 127 percent more expensive last year
As the Hamburg Consumer Center writes, the Tuc Bake Roll was chosen as the deceptive package of the year 2023.
Overall, 54.7 percent of consumers voted for Mondelez's bread chips.
In 2022, Tuc's Bake Rolls were still sold in a 250 gram pack for 1.39 euros - so 100 grams cost just under 56 cents.
The new pack will cost 1.89 euros from 2023, but customers will only receive 150 grams. The price for 100 grams has increased by 70 cents.
The higher price with reduced packaging corresponds to a price increase of at least 127 percent.

In addition to the price and size, the brand also changed, from 7days to Tuc.
The Hamburg consumer advice center reported that many retailers were already charging 1.99 euros for the “new” product.
But the bake rolls are by no means new: the recipe, appearance and nutritional values have not changed, apart from the salt content.
The vzhh finds that “customers of the billion-dollar company are being led by the nose with this brazen marketing trick and fleeced according to every trick in the book.”
Deceptive package of the year: Other products also rose significantly in price
The vzhh sees the retail sector as responsible, “which often presents itself as an advocate for consumers and takes part in this matter and even increases the price for such a product instead of removing it from the range.” Politicians are also called upon to finally do so act to protect consumers from corporate trickery.
The planned change gives hope that if the content is reduced, the packaging will also shrink in order to completely prevent deceptive packaging.

The vzhh even demands that packaging be filled to the brim in order to protect consumers and reduce packaging waste.
The Tuc Bake Rolls were far from the only product that became more expensive in 2023.
The number of hidden price increases reached a new high of 104 in the deceptive packaging list of products published by vzhh.
It is also recommended to pay attention to the gram or kilo price and to report fraudulent packaging.
