For years it has topped the list of the most popular dog breeds in Germany: the mixed breed.
This is shown by the annual evaluation by the animal protection organization Tasso eV, which also operates Europe's largest free pet registry.
In 2023, the following dog breeds were newly registered with Tasso eV:
- Mongrel 105,000
- Labrador Retrievers 17,700
- German Shepherd 9,346
- French Bulldog 9,322
- Chihuahua 9,141
- Golden Retrievers 7,034
- Australian Shepherd 6,782
- Jack Russell Terrier 4,575
- Yorkshire Terriers 3,788
- Havanese 3,767
Tasso advises people who want to adopt a dog: “Know about the breed and characteristics of the dog, ask yourself whether you can really do justice to it.
Don't make your choice just because you think a breed is beautiful, but rather find out about the special features of the respective breed and the individual dog.
When looking for a new four-legged family member, we always recommend going to an animal shelter first, as there are many dogs waiting for a responsible and loving home.”
