First national public transport strike of the year with various inconveniences in cities from north to south of the peninsula due to the reduction of bus, tram and metro runs.

During the 24-hour stop, the service was guaranteed within the time periods required by law: from the start of the daytime service at 8.30am and from 5pm to 8pm. The protest was proclaimed by the grassroots unions Cobas Lavoro Privato, Cub Trasporti, Usb, Adl, Sgb, Workers' associations Cobas and Orsa, which are demanding "decent" salary increases for road workers with a minimum wage of 10 euros an hour, a reduction in working hours from 39 to 35 hours per week but also more protection and safety on site work and more rights.

At a territorial level, the data regarding strike support is "definitely encouraging", say the unions.

Very high peaks were recorded in Turin and Bologna with participation of 75%, then in Rome with 70% where the Roma Lido remained closed, and metro and bus routes were reduced.

In the capital there were scenes of tourists and commuters attacking some passing buses in the streets of the centre.

In Milan the partial figure is around 30-40% of surface personnel and the same is true in the entire Milanese province.

Some sections of Metro Line 2 are closed.

Regular service, however, for the Malpensa Express, which connects the Lombard capital with the airport, and for Trenord.

In Naples Cumana and Circumfllegrea stop, while Line 1 of the metro and the three funiculars: Mergellina, Centrale and Montesanto are in "hiccups".

On the same day there were also inconveniences for those who had to fly from the airports of Brindisi, Bologna and Verona due to a strike, from 1pm to 5pm, by the ENAV flight controllers of these airports.

Looking beyond transport, there could be a new strike in the tertiary and tourism sectors in the coming weeks if the sector contract is not renewed.

"If the trade and tourism counterparts do not change course within the next few weeks, further mobilization will be inevitable", threatens Uiltucs.
