Cashless payments continue to grow throughout Italy: in 2023 cashless transactions increased by 35.5%, while the average cashless receipt is 37 euros, down 8.1% compared to the previous year, a sign of a growing propensity to pay even small amounts by card.

The positive trend involves all Italian provinces, from North to South: the three most cashless are Bolzano (+58.8%), Modena (+57.5%) and Venice (+53.2%), while the average receipt the lowest in Italy is recorded in the province of South Sardinia (29.8 euros).

These are some of the results of SumUp's Cashless City Observatory, which also arrived in the neighborhoods of 10 regional capitals, among the main Italian cities, to draw up the ranking of the most cashless areas in the country.

In the lead are Cannaregio (+163.7%) and Marghera (158.2%) in Venice, followed by Sempione/City Life (+124.4%) in Milan.

For the lowest average receipt, however, the Porto-Saragozza district in Bologna stands out (18.4 euros).

In 2023, digital payments are on the rise among professionals, such as real estate agents and lawyers.

There is constant growth in the horeca (cafés and restaurants, fast food, bars and clubs) and retail (tobacconists, newsstands, cosmetics) sectors.

"From the Cashless City Observatory - comments Umberto Zola, manager of Multiproduct of SumUp - it emerges how digital payments are becoming a habit throughout Italy. In 2023 cashless transactions increased in all Italian provinces, confirming the growth not only in the retail, horeca and tourism sectors, but also among artisans and professionals. Some of SumUp's most innovative products are aimed precisely at merchants who have a rapid cash flow or need a complete solution for orders and payments, such as the Corporate Account or SumUp Cassa Pro".
