Older fireplace stoves must be retrofitted by the end of the year, otherwise they are at risk of extinction.

However, there are also exceptions to which the ban does not apply.

This year the next phase of the Federal Immission Control Act (1. BImSchV) comes into force.

Older wood stoves that exceed certain emission limits must then either be retrofitted or replaced.

The law is intended to prevent the fine dust released when burning wood from damaging the respiratory tract and causing cardiovascular diseases.

Therefore, old wood stoves should be gradually replaced or retrofitted with new, lower-emission models.

However, there are also exceptions among fireplace stoves to which the new regulation does not apply.

Which fireplaces will no longer be allowed to be operated from 2025

The current regulation affects all wood-burning stoves and fireplaces that were put into operation between January 1, 1995 and March 21, 2010.

However, owners still have the option to retrofit their furnaces or decommission them until December 31, 2024.

Wood stoves that do not meet the specified limit values may no longer be used from 2025.

The prescribed limit values already apply to older models.

All newer fireplace stoves (those built after 2010) already comply with the prescribed limit values.

Which fireplaces are exempt from the ban?

However, there are also ovens to which the new regulation does not apply.

According to the Agrarheute

portal, the exceptions include :

  • Bath heaters

  • Basic stoves, such as individual room combustion systems, which are used as heat storage stoves

  • Individual room combustion systems in residential units

  • historical stoves and fireplaces that were built or manufactured before 1950 as well

Chimney sweeps take measurements and conversions

Chimney sweeps or manufacturers provide proof that the prescribed limit values are being met.

If your fireplace does not comply with these requirements, we recommend that you have it retrofitted by your local chimney sweep.

According to Chip.de,

the costs for this are

at least 700 euros.

However, for older ovens, buying a new one may make more sense.

If retrofitting is not technically possible and a new wood stove is not an option, the old stove must be taken out of operation.

Anyone who continues to heat will face a hefty fine.
