Zvonimir Boban has left UEFA to protest against the decision of UEFA president, Aleksander Ceferin, to amend the association's statutes in order to run again as its leader.
"I know well that we must accept the logic of compromise, but faced with this fact, if I accepted it, I would be going against the principles and common values in which I firmly believe. I am very sorry but, reluctantly, I am leaving UEFA", writes Boban in a open letter where he explains the reasons for his resignation.
"I spoke and discussed with the UEFA president regarding a problem that arose during the last Executive meeting in Hamburg - he explains - It is a proposal to the Congress next February, to modify the UEFA statute and allow the same president to be able to run again after this mandate which was supposed to be his last. After expressing my greatest concern and my total disagreement, the president replied to me that for him there is no legal problem, much less ethical, moral and that he would have pursued his aspiration without any doubt", he underlines.
"Zvonimir Boban leaves UEFA by mutual agreement".
UEFA wrote this in a note after the former AC Milan and Croatia champion announced his resignation from the European organisation.
"UEFA today announced the departure of Zvonimir Boban from the organization by mutual consent - reads the note - Boban joined the organization in 2021 as Chief of Football and has initiated several significant projects in technical development, including the creation of the UEFA Football Board and the Youth Football Forum. UEFA thanks Mr Boban for his dedicated service and wishes him good luck in his future career."
