New round of discussions between the governments of Venezuela and Guyana, in Brasilia, in the context of the territorial dispute over the Esequibo oil region.

Acting as mediator between the Venezuelan foreign ministers YvanGil and the Guyanese foreign ministers Hugh Hilton Todd is the head of Brazilian diplomacy Mauro Vieira.

This is the second meeting negotiated by the Brazilian government after the one in December in San Vincent and the Grenadines in which the presidents of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, and Guiana, Irfaan Ali, had agreed "not to use or threaten the use of force" to reach an agreement about the region and intends to "resolve any dispute in accordance with international law".

The agreement had contributed to easing tension after the referendum in which the Venezuelan government obtained popular legitimacy to annex a piece of the neighboring state.

The Esequibo region has been administered by Guyana for more than a century and is the subject of border disputes before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

The wealth of the Amazon country has grown after the discovery of huge oil reserves, estimated at 14.8 billion barrels.

Brazil is the only country that borders Guyana and Venezuela, and a possible military conflict could threaten part of Brazilian territory in Roraima.
