The meaning of street signs is not always clear.
But some traffic signs cause questioning looks.
That's what's behind the gray signs.
Munich - Signs on streets and highways actually have the purpose of showing road users the way and informing them about do's and don'ts.
However, there are also contradictory traffic signs that cause question marks among drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
Other signs, however, reveal nothing at first glance and leave road users guessing.
Mystery about gray traffic signs: Drivers wonder what they mean
“What kind of signs do you often see on highways?” asks a user on the Reddit platform.
The attached picture obviously shows a highway with an exit.
You can see, among other things, directional signs pointing to the right.
However, the user's question is aimed at other traffic signs that can be seen in the image.
What is meant are two gray signs that do not appear to have any printing on them.
The author of the post also provides information about where he saw the mysterious signs.
The photo comes from the Schüttdorf motorway junction in Lower Saxony, on the A30 towards Amsterdam/Bad Bentheim.
Meaning of the mysterious traffic signs: folding sign or warning for wrong-way drivers?
Other users are already making assumptions in the comments about what signs these could be.
“Can be opened.
There can be pretty much anyone behind it.
For example, something related to the weather or detour instructions if there are often major events nearby,” commented one user.
This is a “folding sign with a stainless steel linkage as a lock,” says another user: “These allow various controls to be dynamically activated or deactivated.”
Traffic signs are intended to help regulate traffic.
But some signs cause surprise.

Today this would usually be regulated using a prism controller or LED signage, but such analogue folding signs would be much cheaper, explains the user.
One user, however, suspects a completely different function: “Are these signs that have warnings on the other side for wrong-way drivers?”

the federal government's Autobahn GmbH sheds light on the matter.
The signs in question are actually folding signs.
“In this case it is the signage with the VZ 467.1, the orange detour arrow for diversions within the motorway junction during closures,” says the Westphalia branch.
And further: “If a connection in the intersection is blocked, the traffic is directed through the ears of the intersection or over the neighboring junction using the deflection arrows.” It may also be that traffic signs are not visible for another reason.
