Diet drinks suggest quick weight loss success.
But many are contaminated with mineral oil residues and contain questionable substances.
Eleven fail the test.
Munich – January is known to be the high season for good resolutions – often it’s about losing weight.
Some set fitness goals, others work on their diet.
So-called diet drinks that replace meals appear to be a particularly simple solution.
This refers to powders that are mixed with water, milk or plant-based drink and promise weight loss results.
In a laboratory test by
Ökotest,
only two of 17 powders scored points.
A total of eleven products failed with a result of “poor” to “unsatisfactory”.
Ökotest takes a close look at diet drinks from defects, prices to mineral oil
All products in the test are designed to initially replace two main meals in order to lose weight.
In the second phase, the weight should then be maintained and only one meal should be replaced.
Ökotest
then clustered the powders from various well-known companies into the following categories:
Price per meal
Mineral oil components
Other questionable and/or controversial ingredients
Anomalies in the product declaration according to the Health Claims Regulation
Desirable application instructions available
Other defects
Remarks
This resulted in a test rating for each product for the ingredients, the declaration and application, other defects and an overall rating.
In addition to our own recipes, there are also legal requirements for the composition of diet drinks
Apart from the
Ökotest
criteria, all diet drinks must generally adhere to certain legal requirements in terms of composition and labeling.
These are set out in the Health Claims Regulation.
This regulates how many proteins, minerals, vitamins, fat and calories the drinks should contain.
After all, the drinks are not for everyone, and caution is particularly advised for competitive athletes or sick people.
All products met the official specifications.
Add sweeteners, honey, agave syrup powder, fiber suppliers, flavors and other additives at your own discretion.

Well-known brands: Nine out of 17 diet drinks rated “unsatisfactory”.
The final results of the overall ranking are sometimes shocking.
These nine products failed the test with an overall rating of “unsatisfactory”:

Mineral oil components have been detected in almost all diet drinks
Increased or even significantly increased mineral oil components were detected in each powder.
In addition, all diet drinks – with the exception of “Almased” – contained additional sweeteners that were classified as questionable and/or controversial.
The two products “Slimfast Milkshake Flavor Vanilla” and “Trinkkost Slim Fruity” also performed poorly with a grade of “poor” shortly after the nine drinks.
Traces of mineral oil components were also found here.
Ökotest
also noted that all powders that showed a vanilla pod suggested that they contained components of natural vanilla - but none of them could (sufficiently) prove this.
Two clear winners: Diet drinks with “good” ratings lead the field
Two articles stood out with a consistently “good” rating:
Doppelherz active weight loss shake vanilla flavor
Multaben figure vanilla flavor
What is worrying, however, is that traces of mineral oil components and sweeteners were found even in these two powders.
Overall, the items consist of “good” ingredients, have comprehensive instructions for use and little to no “other defects”.
Just two diet drinks without mineral oil ingredients
At a glance, there are only two products that do not contain mineral oil components.
However, due to the other measurement criteria, these two only received the “sufficient” award and are therefore in the lower midfield: “Body Attack Diet Shake Vanilla” and “Foodspring Shape Shake 2.0 Vanilla Flavor”.
