A doctor explains: why do you see strange lights when you rub your eyes?//@drjoe_md

When you close your eyes or open them in a dark room, you may sometimes notice different patterns and swirls of colors or even flashes of light.

Some of the visual disturbances may be caused by medical conditions that require examination, but in this case it is visual hallucinations that are usually harmless and are actually the result of normal functioning of your eyes.

Get to know the phosphenes, a sensation of light that is experienced when there is no real light causing it, that is, the broad meaning is seeing light without a source of illumination.

"Our eyes don't turn off in the dark, but instead create very weak internal signals that mimic light. These signals are constantly generated by the cells at the back of your eyes," explained Katrina Schmid, an associate professor in the School of Optometric Sciences, in an article published in The Conversation and Vision at the Queensland University of Technology.

"The swirls and waves we see are created by changes in activity from these cells. The spots may be colored because the cells in your eyes that detect color also display this activity," she explained.

Schmid added: "These signals are transmitted to the brain - and the brain interprets this random activity. Your brain doesn't know that they weren't created by real light, so we think we're seeing colored lights and patterns that aren't there. It's a kind of illusion."

When is it dangerous?

Although this scenario usually occurs in healthy people, it can also indicate retinal problems, such as retinal detachment, neurological conditions, or simply rubbing your eyes too much.

You can also cause phosphanes if you accidentally apply light pressure to your eyeball (don't try this at home).

Schmid warned: "If what you see there has changed and the light patterns become much more prominent or remain for a long time, this can indicate a problem that is important to check professionally."
