The reactions to the death of Carl Andre, one of the last giants of the American minimalist artistic movement, are in the image of this radical artist, in form and first of all, forever associated with the violent death of his partner, Cuban land art and body art artist Ana Mendieta, at age 36, on September 8, 1985 in New York.
Although his name appears in the pantheon of American art, with Robert Morris (1931-2018) and Donald Judd (1928-1994), he is also the one who was acquitted, after three years of proceedings, of the murder of his wife in 1988, after he fell out of the window of their apartment located on the 34th floor in Greenwich Village where he was present.
This son of a Swedish immigrant, shipyard draftsman and carpentry enthusiast, died in New York on January 24 at the age of 88.
