The aluminum structure that supports the speed camera damaged during the night along the Flaminia state road in the direction of Foligno-Spoleto at the Eggi - Acquasparta - SantoChiodo junction was cut at the base.
The event happened at 3.43 am, as reported by the local police through the alert service connected to the power system.
The reconstruction was provided by the Municipality.
Checks are now underway to verify whether the cameras in the area may have captured images useful for the investigation.
"This is a cowardly gesture that we strongly condemn, because we are faced with the damage of a prevention device that serves to guarantee road safety" underlined the mayor of Spoleto Andrea Sisti.
"These are incidents that go against the interest of the community - he added - and which must not be emulated, because we risk witnessing damage to public goods of any kind.
It was a coincidence that the aluminum structure did not end up in the middle of the road: otherwise could have caused far more serious damage."
Even the deputy mayor Stefano Lisci, who is responsible for the surveillance and safety of the city and the territory, wanted to underline the danger of the incident.
"It is a fact that has been widely stigmatized - he argued - because it is not acceptable to witness gestures of this type. They are acts that cannot be cleared through customs and considered as joking. The speed camera was positioned in that area because there is a narrowing of the road and the entry lane from the two-lane which, given the danger, requires a moderate pace. As already said on other occasions, our interest is exclusively in guaranteeing the safety of motorists".
The local police have meanwhile guaranteed that the speed camera will be restored "as soon as possible".
