"We are here to ask for forgiveness once again on behalf of the institutions of this Republic for the guilty silence that for decades has enveloped the events of our eastern border and to pay homage to all the Istrians, the Julian-Dalmatians, in order to remain Italian, they decided to leave everything, houses, goods, land for remain with the only thing that the Tito communists could not take away from them, that is their identity".
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this at the national monument in Basovizza for the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the Foibe.
The law that established it, underlined the Prime Minister who also visited the documentary center and left a message in the guest album ("always Italians"), was a "watershed": "I have come many times and I return as an adult to finally celebrate that day of remembrance which swept away once and for all the conspiracy of silence which for unforgivable decades had enveloped the tragedy of the foibe and the drama of the exodus in the oblivion of indifference".
