The flamingo named Ingo, Berlin's oldest zoo resident, has died.

Its age was twice the life expectancy of the colorful birds.

The traditional Berlin Zoo has lost its oldest resident, the flamingo Ingo.

The zoo announced this on its

Instagram

account.

“Ingo, the flamingo, left us at the impressive age of 75 due to old age,” writes @zooberlin alongside a dignified black and white photo of the bird.

A ring on Ingo's leg said June 23, 1948 as his date of birth and Cairo as his place of birth.

According to the German Press Agency, however, it is not clear whether the information is correct.

The pink flamingo has lived in the Berlin Zoo since 1955.

There are also many emotional condolences in the comments section: “I never thought they could get so old.

75 years: How did the flamingo Ingo get so old?

But how did the colorful bird even manage to get so old?

On the one hand, this was due to the zoo's optimized food and all-round care.

On the other hand, “there is a lack of natural enemies in the zoo, as zookeeper Thomas Lenzner once explained,” according to the German Press Agency.

Due to his age, Ingo had recently needed some rest from his peers: “He was no longer the fastest and, according to Lenzner, was limping a little.

At 75 at the time, that was hardly surprising.” You can see fluffy flamingo chicks here.

In Berlin, the 66-year-old gorilla lady Fatou is now following in the great footsteps of Flamingo Ingo.

She is now not only the oldest animal in the zoo, but also the oldest gorilla in the world.
