A Russian military appeals court has sentenced the sociologist Boris Kagarlitsky, who opposed the war in Ukraine, to 5 years in prison.
The court significantly increased the first degree sentence, which included the release of the Marxist university professor and a fine of around 6,000 euros.
Kagarlitsky was accused of "justifying terrorism", according to his lawyer, for a post in which he analyzed the military consequences of the attack on the Crimean bridge in October 2022.
The sociologist was arrested on July 25th.
The news of the conviction was reported by various Russian media, including the Interfax agency, which cited the court itself.
According to the agency, the public prosecution had challenged the first degree sentence, requesting five and a half years of imprisonment for the professor of the Higher School of Socio-economic Sciences in Moscow.
The sociologist was also sentenced not to administer websites for two years.
