An innovation in the general inspection could soon cost vehicle owners dearly.

The so-called “defect loop” should be eliminated.

Munich - After initial registration, every car in Germany has to undergo a general inspection after three years, and then every two years.

According to an evaluation by TÜV Nord, more and more vehicles are showing defects.

Due to a change in the StVZO, the HU could soon become more expensive.

Change in the general inspection: Elimination of the defect loop could result in higher costs

The federal government should work on changing the road traffic registration regulations (StVZO).

A letter submitted to the North Rhine-Westphalia Motor Vehicle Trade Association states that the so-called defect loop should be eliminated in the future, writes

.

The Federal Ministry of Justice is currently examining the legality of this proposal.

The defect loop is often crucial during the general inspection in order to receive the TÜV sticker despite small defects.

If the TÜV inspector at the HU only finds small defects that are quickly remedied, he can still issue the sticker after the defects have been remedied.

If the defect loop were eliminated, cars would first have to be repaired and would therefore not receive the TÜV sticker.

This not only takes significantly longer, but also involves higher financial outlay.

As the ADAC writes, the average cost of a general inspection and emissions test is already around 140 euros.

“An extreme additional effort” – Association criticizes possible changes to the main inspection

The Central Association of the German Motor Vehicle Industry criticized the emerging plans to change the general inspection.

“If, from a legal point of view, the company is not allowed to carry out repairs on motor vehicles during the HU test, then the vehicle owner is subject to extreme additional work.

There is also a high risk of undeclared work due to this change to the StVZO,” said ZDK Vice President and Federal Guild Master Detlef Peter Grün.

If defects are discovered during the general inspection, a vehicle would have to be inspected again after the repair, which would cost an additional 30 euros.

As TÜV Nord announced, only six out of ten vehicles were free of defects between June 2022 and June 2023.

On average, four out of ten drivers would have to pay more in the future than before.

If you don't get the TÜV sticker and continue driving, you risk a fine of 40 euros.

From the eighth month there can even be a point in Flensburg.
