In certain emergency situations, water may become scarce.
There is a list of things you should have at home in case of an emergency.
Hamm - There are situations in which water could become scarcer.
An example that occurs more often: During construction work, the water supply has to be interrupted for a few hours.
But shorter-term things such as a massive power outage or other disasters or emergency situations can also lead to shortages, reports wa.de.
Citizens in Germany should be prepared for such an emergency.
Finally, basic hygiene such as showering, brushing your teeth or washing your hands should continue to be maintained.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) explains how you can take precautions if there is no longer any warm water or cold water is only available for a few hours.
No water: List shows how to prepare for emergency situations
When there are power outages, there is usually still some water in the pipes at the beginning.
Pour this into larger containers such as pots or buckets.
You can use this water for hygiene and toileting.
However, you should still use the water sparingly.
The BBK recommends:
If there is a prolonged water shortage, use disposable dishes and cutlery so that water does not have to be used for washing up.
If necessary, use alternative cleaning products that require little or no water, such as dry shampoo or hand washing pastes.
Use wet and disinfectant wipes to clean your hands.
Use household paper or damp cleaning cloths for cleaning.
Use household gloves.
If necessary, use a camping toilet with spare liquid.
You can make your process water usable for longer by using disinfectants.
This is available from camping or outdoor stores.
“Please seek advice on this,” writes the responsible federal office.
List of things to have on hand in case of an emergency
Because hygiene should not be neglected in an emergency, it makes sense to always have certain products in stock.
The BBK includes the following things:
Soap
laundry detergent
toothpaste
toothbrush
wet wipes
Disinfectant wipes
Hygiene items (e.g. menstrual hygiene items, diapers)
Toilet paper
household paper
Garbage bags
Household gloves
Disinfectant
Camping toilet and spare bag/fluid
How long should an emergency supply last?
First of all, an emergency supply should only contain the bare essentials.
To bridge the gap, the emergency supply should last for around ten days; if there is little space in your own four walls, an emergency supply of three to four days is sufficient.
An emergency supply can be created quickly: it is enough to buy supplies in everyday life before the last pack has been opened.
