In spring it's not just green and blooming outside.
You can also encourage some houseplants to grow in your home with the right pruning.
Kassel – It’s not just the garden that needs pruning in spring.
So that the plants can get back to full speed, the green favorites in your own four walls should also receive special attention.
The best time for this is spring.
Here you can find out which houseplants could use a little love right now.
Cut back houseplants now: This is what you should know
In order to be able to form strong new shoots and to prevent the houseplant from becoming too large for its pot, pruning should begin in spring.
This means the plant receives significantly more light and does not waste energy on dead shoots.
According to
Mdr
-Garten and 24.Garten.de, these potted plants can tolerate pruning particularly well:
Monstera
Dragon trees
Ficus
Succulents
Cacti
Climbing plants
yucca
Philodendron
Citrus plants
Be careful when pruning: It is better to proceed with caution when it comes to orchids and some other houseplants
However, there are also houseplants that should only be cut back very carefully or, at best, not at all.
The orchid belongs to the latter.
Plant consultant Martin Breidbach emphasized to the German Press Agency (dpa) that only individual yellowed leaves and dried shoots may be removed from orchids, as well as oak leaves, lucky feathers and small round cacti.
Houseplants bring life into the home, but they also need a little love here and there.
With the right pruning it grows and thrives splendidly.

The magazine My Beautiful Garden
also emphasizes that leaves should generally not be removed from orchids if they are still healthy
.
If a leaf needs to be removed in an emergency, you should definitely make sure to remove it completely.
An injured leaf gives bacteria and fungi a large surface to attack.

Caution is also advised with special palm trees, explains Andreas Höfer from the board of the Federal Association of Retail Gardeners to the dpa.
If the plant only has one point of vegetation, for example the fronds only grow out of the trunk in one place, then you should avoid cutting it back completely.

To ensure that the houseplants do not get sick, an important point should also be taken into account when pruning: The cutting tool must be clean and, at best, disinfected.
This will help prevent the plant from becoming infected with fungi or bacteria.
If the plant already has a larger wound, you can use home remedies such as cinnamon.
If enough fertilizer is applied after cutting, this will help the plant regenerate as quickly as possible.
