The small town of Bad Herrenalb in Baden-Württemberg is confronted with an unusual situation: according to the city, 29 candidates have applied for the office of mayor.
They were admitted to the election on Monday night, a city spokesman said. "We're very surprised, because that's an exceptionally high number," he said. Apparently, people from the environment of the satire party "The Party" had applied - "some have written at least in the application or posted on Facebook," said the spokesman. They came from the entire republic - for example from Cologne, Berlin, Bremen or Wilhelmshaven. First the "Badische Neueste Nachrichten" reported.
Whether all candidates turn up for the introductory rounds is questionable - and could then be a test of patience for the audience. Because every candidate theoretically has 15 minutes of speaking time. The community had therefore until Wednesday asked for feedback who actually asks the questions of citizens. If many announce themselves for the first round on September 30, the local council could also decide on a shortening of the speaking time beforehand.
The community sees the hype pragmatic. The fact that candidates can be established is a democratic fundamental right. And: "We certainly benefit from this advertising for our beautiful city," said the spokesman. The election is on October 20.
