US President Donald Trump has admitted that he has ordered the assassination of the commander of the Qods Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Lieutenant-General Qassem Soleimani, in Iraq.
In an interview with reporters today quoted by Reuters, Trump tried to justify the assassination, claiming that it was not intended to ignite war and said that the United States was not seeking to change the regime in Iran.
Trump's words came after Joe Biden, the former US Vice President nominated for the upcoming presidential elections, criticized the American administration’s assassination of Soleimani saying, “Trump put a dynamite finger in a powder keg.” As Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi indicated that this process would “escalate the severity Tension in the region. ”
The leader of the Islamic Revolution in Iran, Imam Sayyid Ali Khamenei, had vowed a harsh response to the assassination of General Soleimani following the air aggression of the American forces in Baghdad, while the Iranian Supreme National Security Council stressed that criminals should expect harsh retaliation at the right time and place.
