The citizens sit at home - and produce rubbish.

It is a veritable flood of waste.

But there is an even more pressing problem.

district

- People around the world have been stuck in the corona pandemic for over a year. The consequences, contact restrictions and lockdown, mean that citizens spend most of their time at home - and produce rubbish. The district office draws a mixed balance. As Robert Stangl, the press spokesman for the Freising District Office, reports, "Corona has caused some changes in the amount of waste". This is shown above all by the proportion of bulky waste. The district office recorded an increase of 26 percent in 2020 compared to 2019. In figures, that is an increase of 650 tons. The reason, according to Stangl: “Increased domestic activities.” Overall, the total amount of bulky waste from January to December is 3,173 tons. In 2019 that was 2523 tons. In December alone, when the federal government decided on the second lockdown, the district citizens gave 43 tons more bulky waste to the recycling centers.

More rubbish, but also more recyclable materials

At the same time, however, the proportion of recyclable materials rose by around eight percent, according to the district office.

For example, there was more wood - old furniture.

“A lot of cellars were probably cleared out and the house in general spruced up,” commented the press officer on the development.

Especially with the cardboard boxes it shows a clear plus.

A full 24 percent - the reason is likely to be the many online orders.

In contrast, there was a significant 21 percent reduction in commercial waste.

According to the district office's figures, there was a decrease of 378 tons.

This was noticeable from March to December and thus dragged on until the end of the year.

The amount of household waste remained relatively constant compared to the previous year.

The district office can only determine a slight increase of four percent.

Trashed container spaces: It's getting worse and worse

One problem is becoming more and more acute: littered container spaces.

The municipality of Neufahrn and the city of Moosburg, for example, have both recorded a clear negative trend since the beginning of the corona pandemic, as the press spokeswoman for Neufahrn, Gabriele Ostertag-Hill, and Moosburg's head of administration Josef Mühlberger confirm.

"In Neufahrn," more or less almost all container spaces are littered, "says Ostertag-Hill.

“Mostly the locations on Galgenbachweg and Sepp-Manger-Straße.” Caritas takes care of the disposal of the improper garbage.

According to Ostertag-Hill, she has now even increased the purging rhythm to three times a week.

The costs for this amount to around 40,000 euros per year.

Erding has already turned on a detective agency

The city of Moosburg has noticed the trash trend particularly in remote places such as the swimming pool, the stadium and at Rewe.

“There is little activity there, and those are container spaces that quickly tempt you to simply unload,” says Josef Mühlberger.

The men in the building yard then have to clean up the rubbish.

It seems to be even worse in the neighboring district of Erding, where a detective agency is now monitoring the container sites.

This is currently not an issue in the Freising district, as Robert Stangl explains.

"In addition, it would have to be checked in advance whether this alternative would be permissible in terms of data protection law".

Now the only option left for the district is to punish all offenses with administrative offense proceedings.

For this, however, according to Stangl, the violation must be specifically proven - for example in the form of specific observations or photos.
