Cornelia Irmer has been involved in local politics for over 17 years.

First as mayor of Geretsried, most recently as district councillor.

Now she wants to resign her mandate.

"It's time, it's enough now," says the 71-year-old when asked by our newspaper.

- In 2007, Irmer - from 2004 to 2014 independent town hall chief in Geretsried - had rejected a candidacy for the district council for various reasons.

In the local elections of 2014 and 2020, she stood for the Free Voters and achieved the second-best result for the group after District Administrator Josef Niedermaier.

Now it is time for her to retire from local politics.

"I can feel it," she says, looking at her age and that of her husband Klemens, who is 80 years old and worked as a deacon for many years.

According to Irmer, both of them practiced professions that made great demands on them – also on many evenings.

"We're fine," said the former mayor.

"And we want to spend the time we have left together." They still have a lot to do and there is no reason to postpone these plans.

Decision matured over several months

The decision to withdraw from the district council matured over several months.

"It was always fun for me, I was involved and respected," sums up Irmer, who has been chairwoman of the VdK in Geretsried since 2018.

But when she looked at her still well-filled calendar, she began to ponder more and more: at least 25 district council and another 25 VdK appointments a year.

In addition, parliamentary group meetings and her commitment as an advisor on the board of the Free Voters Geretsried.

Give up what?

Finally, she gave preference to the VdK – also because there is a candidate in the district council who will move up for the 71-year-old.

According to the list, Tölzer Michael Lindmair could take Irmer's place.

The outgoing district councilor intends to continue to hold the position of VdK chairwoman.

"It's here on site and is very important to me," emphasizes the Geretsriederin.

"I'm very involved in that."
