Opinion | Before Reconciliation: Heaviness and especially Suspicion | Israel today

2022-02-17T21:08:04.487Z

Turkey was until recently (and perhaps still is) a base state from which Hamas conducted its financial affairs • It is not enough to now receive a repeated Turkish promise "to prevent any terrorist activity against Israel from Turkish soil"

As the victim of one "reconciliation agreement" with Turkey, in which it was burned at the stake (June 2016), Israel must now beware of the tsunami.

The intended partner Erdogan - whose country's economic situation is very bad, and he needs us as integrity advocates with the Biden administration - is stubbornly courting us.

But the way in which one reconciliation agreement has already been violated with us must turn on huge warning lights in Jerusalem.

Erdogan did not prevent terrorist or military activity from Turkish soil against Israel, as he promised.

In the decade since the Marmara affair, hundreds of terrorist attacks have been targeted in Turkey by a number of Hamas members, most of them deportees from the Shalit deal.

They established their abode in Istanbul, and enjoyed the hostel and even the Turkish citizenship that Erdogan provided to some of them.

The connection between the terrorist cells and Hamas-Turkey has been repeatedly exposed over the years.

Among other things, planned terrorist attacks in Jerusalem were planned in Turkey - in the Malcha Mall, Teddy Stadium, the light rail and the central station - as well as in Be'er Sheva and the Tel Hashomer base.

Attempts at a coup against the Palestinian Authority and the planning of assassinations of Israeli figures were also exposed, as well as trainings held in Turkey for various missions, including terrorist attacks, kidnappings, attacks on settlements and the laying of explosives.

If it were a distant history, and Turkey would prove that it is improving its ways - fine;

But to this day, Erdogan refuses to define Hamas as a terrorist organization, and only recently did the GSS uncover a broad Hamas infrastructure (about 50 activists from various parts of the West Bank), which planned a series of serious attacks, including kidnappings and suicide bombings. About two months ago, the GSS arrested four members of a Hamas firing squad near Hebron, which was targeted from Turkey by 'Abd Rahman Ranimat.

A base state for Hamas

Until recently, Turkey was (and perhaps still is) a base state from which Hamas conducted its financial affairs, including financing terrorist organizations in Judea and Samaria. , To meet with their colleagues there.

The Israeli memory is short, but not so much.

In recent years Erdogan has sent arms to Jerusalem and the Temple Mount;

Compare Israel's conduct vis-à-vis the Palestinians to the actions of the Nazis against the Jews;

He called the Israeli government "continuing Hitler's path" and even said that "filthy Zionists are polluting the Temple Mount."

All this was accompanied by a megalomaniacal show that presented Turkey as the representative of Muslim civilization on earth, and Erdogan himself as the patron and protector of the Muslim Brotherhood all over the world, and as one who seeks to regain influence in all areas of the historic Ottoman Empire.

The condition: close Hamas offices

Therefore, it is not enough to now receive a repeated Turkish promise "to prevent any terrorist activity against Israel from Turkish soil."

In this movie we were already, and we ate straw and bitterness.

The closure of Hamas offices in Turkey, and the removal of key operatives such as Hassam Badran, Musa al-Akari, Zahad Jabarin or Jihad Ya'amur, whose organization has tried to wreak havoc and bloodshed here, are preconditions for any progress.

The cessation of Hamas '"construction bureau", which until recently operated from Istanbul in the production and upgrading of weapons, including rockets, in favor of Hamas' activities in the Gaza Strip, is also mandatory; not to mention transfers of funds from Turkey to "charities," Blurred or non-existent.

In the face of Turkey, the seemingly new Turkey must therefore adopt the age-old rule: its heaviness and suspicion, with a strong emphasis on its suspicion.

Were we wrong?
