Joe Biden promised a
“stable and predictable”
strategic relationship with Putin.
A veteran of foreign policy after his long career in the Senate, then eight years as Obama's vice-president, he prided himself on knowing the Russian president well personally and on harboring no illusions about him.
"Vladimir Putin doesn't want me to be president...because I'm the only person who's ever lived up to him,"
Biden tweeted during his campaign.
Once elected, he announced as soon as he took office that he had no intention of allowing himself to be misled by his Russian counterpart.
"I have made it clear to President Putin, in a very different way than my predecessor, that the days of the United States bowing down to aggressive Russian actions are over,"
