Munich is not idly watching.

Every day people take to the streets to demonstrate against the Ukraine war.

On Saturday there was a special action across the city.

Around 2,000 people (3,000 were registered) formed an impressive human chain on Saturday at 12 noon with shivering temperatures.

The demonstrators stood hand in hand from the Russian consulate on Europaplatz over stairs and sidewalks past the Friedensengel and along Maximilianstrasse to Max-Joseph-Platz.

There the chain turned and meandered through the Viktualienmarkt to Sendlinger Tor and on to Lessingstrasse in Ludwigsvorstadt, where it reached its destination and end point: the Ukrainian consulate.

The route measures more than four kilometers, but the line of people remained largely closed, only gaps had to remain on some main roads for safety reasons.

Meeting points had been announced on the internet in advance so that the chain could be well coordinated.

Munich: "Ukraine and Russia should be connected on a human level"

The looks of the demonstrators, who were armed with posters and flags, were serious, the symbolism weighed heavily: "Ukraine and Russia should be connected on a human level," explained Gunnar Kattenstroth.

He was the private initiator of the campaign and summed it up: “People were grateful for the chance to speak their mind and give free rein to their displeasure.” Co-organiser Stephan Salat had said beforehand: “We want to use this to set a sign of connection , because this is the only way to resolve this conflict.”

The chain broke up at 12.30 p.m., according to the police*, the demonstration was peaceful.

Around 50 demonstrators remained in front of the Russian consulate.

The human chain wasn't the only solidarity action for Ukraine* in the city.

Also on Saturday there was a train from Karl-Stützel-Platz to Odeonsplatz.

On Sunday at 2 p.m., around 4,000 participants followed the call from “Pulse of Europe eV” to a demonstration on Max-Joseph-Platz.
