The cycle path to Baierlach is ill-fated.

Traffic planners question the measure.

The Greens oppose it.

Eurasburg – The residents of the Eurasburg district have been wanting a cycle path to Baierlach for what feels like an eternity.

That is why the path is also one of the "milestones" that the municipality would like to implement in the next few years.

This also includes a new multi-purpose hall and the merging of the two school buildings in Beuerberg and Eurasburg.

Is bike path in Eurasburg uneconomical?

"Don't let the project fall," says the Green Council

A traffic concept drawn up on behalf of the municipality by the Ulm engineering office, Modus Consult, now raises the question of how necessary the cycle path actually is.

The concept is based on a traffic survey that was carried out in July and August last year on Unterherrnhauser Straße (TÖL 22) in the Loisachbrücke area.

The result was presented by traffic planner Reiner Neumann at the most recent municipal council meeting.

On peak days, around 1,600 motor vehicles were counted within 24 hours, five percent of which can be attributed to heavy goods traffic, i.e. "everything over 3.5 tons".

Added to this are 200 cyclists in one day.

Cycle path in Eurasburg: Greens want to stick to the project

That was “a lot at first,” Neumann stated.

However, the "but" was not long in coming.

In principle, there are several options with a view to cycling road users.

In addition to "roadside cycle paths" and "common footpaths and cycle paths", "guidance on the road" can also be considered - and this in turn in different variants.

Namely in "mixed traffic" (i.e. as before), with hard shoulders or with special cycle lanes.

When asked by local councilor Jakob Koch, the traffic planner explained that the creation of a hard shoulder - for example with a "continuous line on both sides if possible" - is hardly possible here due to the required total lane width.

Traffic planners are skeptical: the cycle path plan to Baierlach could fail

"The street space doesn't allow that," said Neumann.

On the basis of the traffic survey and "taking into account the general traffic conditions" (i.e. the insufficient use from a planning perspective), he recommends "leading bicycle traffic on the existing lane in mixed traffic".

This assessment corresponds to the district's cycle traffic concept with a focus on everyday cycling, which it also took into account in its analysis.

He sees the crossing of Unterherrnhauser Strasse with State Road 2370 (Wolfratshauser Strasse) as a bigger problem and more critical for cyclists.

"That's more important than a separate cycle path," explained Neumann, who only wanted his conclusion to be understood as a recommendation.

“You are the sovereign,” he said to the municipal council.

And the subject will continue to occupy them.

It's also about "safety quality for 500 residents", which is why you "take a holistic look at it," said municipal councilor Hans Urban.

"We won't let that go if we're convinced that it's good for the people there."

But it is a very high financial outlay.”
