The parents of policeman Barak Meshulam, 29, who was run over to death last night (Sunday) by a 17-year-old Ramallah resident at a checkpoint on Road 4 during an escape attempt, today expressed their displeasure at the lenient treatment they received for the rapist boy.

According to them, the Magistrate's Court in Petah Tikva extended the suspect's detention until Sunday.

Meshulam's father sought to convey a "message of change" in relation to such offenses.

"We are talking about America being the most democratic in the world - I think we are the most democratic in the world. In America it is a death sentence and for us it is a reward, and a person learns. It is a shame if it is called democracy. It is a shame."

His mother said in pain: "When he moved to Raanana, he told me, 'Mom, don't worry, there is nothing in Raanana.' I did not think it would end like this. I did not believe it would be the end."

On the rapist she said that "the most painful thing is that my son arrested this thief in his body. He murdered him. I am told he wrote that he thought he was a pillar. My son was not a pillar. My son was a tall, wide, sturdy policeman. He went in to Kill him. "

On the fact that his detention was extended by only one day, she said that "the fact that he is a minor does not mean that he should be allowed to move around freely. "Not to chase after them, not to put up barriers, not to protect their bodies. Every policeman will return home to the family from which he came - to the wife, to the parents, to the children, to the siblings.

The widow, Ariel said: "Once it came to me it is close to each of us. Someone in the government must wake up. Everyone is talking about not giving the police the rights they deserve in every way - the salary, harsh arrests, their hands are just tied. Yesterday I shouted my cry "From the stomach because I can not turn the wheel back. But it's for my girlfriends. All my husband's friends can't talk."

Meshulam was run over to death at a checkpoint on Road 4 near the Raanana junction during the 17-year-old's attempted escape, after stealing a car in Holon.

According to the suspicion, the boy ran over the policeman with a vehicle that he had previously stolen from the Gush Dan area.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

After the crash, the suspect escaped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.

Kfar Saba police arrested him in the Sharon area after searches with the help of a police helicopter.

His widow, Ariela, paid tribute to him at his funeral in a broken voice: "Lightning. Love of my life for 11 years. Know that I love you with all my heart. I'm not angry. I will tell you every day what an amazing father you are. "What is love. Thank you for the beautiful years, love you forever."

Afterwards, the widow shouted at the Minister of Internal Security Amar Bar-Lev: "Start protecting the police here, why don't you give them permission to shoot? Look into the eyes of the women here, and tell them it will not happen."
