Retired superintendent Nisso Shaham, who was convicted of an indecent act and sexual harassment, was released from prison this evening (Thursday).

This, following the Supreme Court's rejection of the prosecutor's appeal.

Shaham was convicted of fraud and breach of trust, indecent act and sexual harassment.

He was originally sent to ten months in prison - which he began serving in March, but the parole board ruled that he would be released early and its decision was confirmed by the Nazareth District Court and now also by the Supreme Court.

The chairman of Naamat, Hagit Par, said in response to the Supreme Court's decision to release Niso Shaham: "The court's decision is scandalous and will not contribute to public trust in the system.

This is a sex offender who initially received lenient treatment and a light sentence and now receives an additional reward in the form of a shortened prison term. What a difficult message the Supreme Court is sending to the victims today.

A good word, nevertheless, to the prosecutor's office that did not give up and tried to fight the decision."

Shaham entered Hermon prison in March after he was sentenced to ten months of actual imprisonment and five months of probation for his conviction of fraud, breach of trust and sexual harassment.

About a month ago, the attorney's office petitioned against the parole board's decision to shorten Shaham's sentence, but the request was rejected.

"Shaham does not deserve early release because his dangerousness still remains. Shaham has not taken responsibility for his actions and sees no fault in them, and his need for treatment, which he claimed, is not sincere either," the prosecutor's office said.

"Therefore, the committee's decision in this case is extremely unreasonable, which requires judicial intervention."

In November of last year, the Jerusalem Supreme Court rejected Shaham's appeal, stating that he had relationships with eight junior female police officers, and then made various decisions regarding them.

The judge who convicted him, Shmuel Melamed, explained that in his opinion, even though Shachem was convicted of only one count of breach of trust, it must be taken into account that these are eight different affairs, which were included under the same charge.

In 2018, Shaham was convicted of an indecent act on a policewoman he kissed, but was acquitted of the charges of breach of trust.

However, the prosecution later appealed his acquittal, and he was convicted of sexual harassment and breach of trust.

The case was returned to the Magistrate's Court for sentencing, when in February 2020 it was decided to impose ten months of actual imprisonment on Shaham and payment of compensation to some of the female police officers with whom he had a relationship.
