"Refrain from permitting the return of Israeli settlers to an area covered by legislation passed in March, in accordance with the commitments of former Prime Minister Sharon and the current Israeli government to the United States," a spokeswoman for the US Embassy in Israel said Thursday evening after Israel Hayom revealed the intention to regulate the Homesh outpost.
Yesterday, Israel Hayom reported that Defense Minister Yoav Galant had instructed Central Command Chief Yehuda Fuchs to sign an order that would apply and implement the law to cancel the disengagement in northern Samaria, which was approved by the Knesset two months ago. This is a move of security and political significance, following which the IDF is preparing to reinforce forces, establish outposts and even recruit forces there in order to guard civilians who will now be able to enter the area in northern Samaria.
"At least one of the outposts in this area, Homesh, was built illegally on private Palestinian land," the U.S. Embassy said. "The U.S. calls on Israel to refrain from allowing the return of Israeli settlers to an area covered by legislation passed in March, in accordance with commitments made by former Prime Minister Sharon and the current Israeli government to the United States."
"It was clear to us that promoting the settlements is an obstacle to peace and achieving the two-state solution. This certainly includes the creation of new settlements, the construction or legalization of outposts, or permitting construction of any kind on private Palestinian land or deep inside the West Bank adjacent to Palestinian communities."
