US President Joe Biden issued an unprecedented statement from the White House on Tuesday, reiterating his unequivocal support for Israel.
"Many civilians were slaughtered in Israel. Among them are 14 American citizens. Parents protected their children while they were being murdered. Young people died during a peace celebration at a music festival. This trauma will not go away. Some parents are still waiting to hear from their children. Babies, Holocaust survivors, were taken prisoner. Hamas violated every code of humanity.
"It's terrorism. But to the sorrow of the Jewish people, this is nothing new. This attack brought dark memories of genocide against the Jews. We must be clear – we stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. We will make sure that they have what they need to protect themselves and respond to this period. There is no justification for terrorism, no excuse.
"Hamas does not stand with the Palestinians for the right to self-determination. He stands by the desire to murder Jews, to use civilians as civil shields. Like every other nation in the world, Israel has the right to respond to such attacks.
Today, America is praying for all the families that have been torn apart. It's heartbroken that you lose a family. The rage, the pain, the sense of hopelessness.
"My team has been in touch with the Israelis from the moment it started. We offered military aid. We will ensure that Israel is not left without sufficient military equipment. My administration is working with Congress on this war. It's not political – it's about the security of the world, the security of the United States. We know that there are American citizens who were captured by Hamas. We will help Israel in the struggle for the return of the prisoners.
"I will say it again to every country and every organization that is thinking of intervening in a situation – don't do it. Not. The Department of Homeland Security closely monitors developments and threats to Jewish communities in the United States. Let me be clear: there is no place for hatred here in America. Not against Jews, not Muslims, not against anyone. We renounce terrorism. We condemn these deeds of Satan."
