Four Hills Tournament in Bischofshofen: Kobayashi unbeatable, Geiger strong fourth

The Bergisel jumping in Innsbruck has to be relocated to Bischofshofen due to the wind chaos.

It remains as usual, Ryoyu Kobayashi dominates the Four Hills Tournament 2021/22 almost at will.

The Japanese also came out on top in the third jump.

However, he has to fight hard in Bischofshofen after a somewhat subdued first round.

Kobayashi secured victory thanks to an almost perfect second jump ahead of the two Norwegians Marius Lindvik and Halvor Egner Granerud.

Karl Geiger shines fourth.

After a weak first run, Markus Eisenbichler saved himself in eighth place in the top ten.

Severin Freund is twelfth, just ahead of Andreas Wellinger (15th) and Stepahn Leyhe (20th).

Only four meters separate the two.

The best German is Karl Geiger in fourth.

Markus Eisenbichler (16th), Severin Freund (17th) and Andreas Wellinger (18th) and Stephan Leyhe are also in the second round.

Kobayashi jumps only slightly shorter than his Norwegian competitor at 137 meters.

The second of the 25 duels will be a purely German matter: birthday boy Stephan Leyhe (turns 30 today) measures himself against Pius Paschke. In the fourth knockout duel, Constantin Schmid has to deal with the Japanese Yukiya Sato. Severin Freund only meets Sato's compatriot Daiki Ito in the 14th duel. The remaining German participants follow in duels 19 to 21: First Andreas Wellinger jumps against the Turkish Fatih Arda Ipcioglu, then Markus Eisenbichler against the Swiss veteran Simon Ammann and then Karl Geiger against Evgenij Klimov from Russia.

As usual, 50 jumpers compete in knockout duels in the first round.

Only the winners of the 25 duels and the five best losers (lucky losers) are also included in the second round.

In the meantime, light snowfall has set in.

In a little more than half an hour, the third competition of the Four Hills Tournament should start.

2.30 p.m.:

The qualification is history - and the probability that Ryoyu Kobayashi stumbles again is getting smaller and smaller.

His jumps are extremely stable, currently nobody seems to be able to hold a candle to him.

But the conditions in Bischofshofen are not easy, the fog got thicker and thicker in the last hour.

The Japanese flies in a different sphere at 141 meters and once again takes the qualifying victory.

Munich / Bischofshofen - There was great chaos in Innsbruck on Tuesday.

Although it was clear early on that with the foehn winds on the Bergiselschanze there would be no safe jumping at the Four Hills Tournament, the jury repeatedly postponed the start.

At 3 p.m. the final cancellation - and the move to Bischofshofen.

On the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze the 3rd competition will be made up on Wednesday.

This decision was welcomed by the athletes.

DSV hope Markus Eisenbichler even took it with humor and was ready to joke.

“I had my pants full in the wind, it is wiser that way.

Now I have to go home again and get new underwear for the next competitions in Bischofshofen, ”joked the 30-year-old Bavarian after the third Four Hills Tournament at Bergisel was canceled and relocated to Bischofshofen.

The third competition will take place there on Wednesday (4.30 p.m.), before the grand and traditional final follows on Thursday (5.30 p.m.).

The decision to refuse Innsbruck was unanimously approved by the jumpers and those responsible.

"It would have gotten too dark at some point," commented Eisenbichler on the Bergisel facility with the still missing floodlights.

From DSV's point of view, the Innsbruck cancellation may even be a good thing, because the German eagles have rarely been able to shine there in the past.

Even if the gap to the leader Ryoyu Kobayashi is almost impossible to catch up, Eisenbichler and Co. want to try everything again.

"We are still these points behind and have to hope for a mistake from Kobayashi," said national coach Stefan Horngacher in front of the rare Bischofshofen double that had only happened once in the tour history - 2008.
