Christmas market in Erfurt: allegedly drunk raccoon shot

2019-12-23T15:23:09.652Z

A raccoon stumbled across the Erfurt Christmas market in early December - and was shot. Now a local artist has carved a monument for the animal.

In the future, a small wooden statue will commemorate the supposedly drunk raccoon, which stumbled across the Erfurt Christmas market in early December and made international headlines. The city hunter had finally shot the animal.

The Bad Blankenburg chainsaw artist Florian Lindner alias "Holzflori" has now carved a raccoon out of the remains of the Erfurt Christmas tree "Rupfi", holding a red wine bottle in his paws and sipping it.

The bear artist explained that the animal was dear to him and many others. Lindner brought the raccoon sculpture to Cathedral Square on Sunday, where it will be exhibited on Christmas holidays.

Was the bear drunk or sick?

What was really behind the confused walk of the raccoon has not yet been clarified. The raccoon was exhausted and had rested under a trash can in front of the Erfurt town hall. Then he got up and staggered through the area. The story began when a police spokesman told media officials that the bear was "apparently alcoholic". When the animal later collapsed in an entrance, the fire brigade was called. It was said that the bear was sick.

Raccoons are not protected in Germany, they can be hunted. However, they must not be killed in cities and towns. According to the German Hunting Association, 172,549 raccoons were killed nationwide in the 2017/2018 hunting year.
