BD: our favorite bubbles from Angoulême

2020-02-01T16:37:07.471Z

At the time of the festival's winners, we offer our own selection of the five best albums in competition.

Angoulême has released its Fauves. Six prizes, including the Fauve d'Or for the best album of the year, chosen from among the 43 in competition by the Grand Jury, chaired this year by the author Marion Montaigne (“In the combi of Thomas Pesquet”…). A prize list to which must be added the SNCF polar price, that of heritage, youth and the young adult price…

In total, 72 albums are seeking a reward. Here are our own favorites.

Fascinating "Indies fourbes"

To all lord, all honor: the jury of journalists of the Parisian chose "Les Indes fourbes" as its "Star" of the year 2019, in other words the best album. And it's amply deserved: an imaginary continuation of a Spanish picaresque novel from the 16th century, this comic strip with a great show reads like you are enjoying a replay of an "Indiana Jones". Hailed by critics, the dazzling fresco by Guarnido and Ayroles also won over the public: the album was the 4th best seller of the year.

"Les Indes fourbes" , by Ayroles and Guarnido. Ed. Delcourt. 160 pages. 34.90 euros.

The “In Waves” wave

It is THE graphic novel of the year. The first autobiographical work of a young American author, Aj Dungo, he tells his heartbreaking love story with Kristen, suffering from cancer that will prevail. In a story built on alternation, to avoid the pitfall of pathos, "In Waves" also traces the saga of surfing from its origins, a sport for which the couple had the same passion. Impossible to plunge into this wave without being moved to tears and admiring the graphic work, all in blue swirls, of this promising author.

"In Waves" , by Aj Dungo. Ed. Casterman. 376 pages. 23 euros.

Prefer "System Preference"

Lover of anticipation stories, rejoice and rush to "System Preference". Ugo Bienvenu imagines our near future there, in 2055, when all the memory of the world is stored in a huge database which must be regularly purged ... Some will decide to revolt and try to preserve what can be. This SF fable, which speaks as much about ecology as about technological dangers, is sometimes cold in the back, as it is likely. But, deeply humanist, it always lights up with a ray of hope. To devour.

"System Preference" , by Ugo Bienvenu. Ed. Denoël Graphic. 168 pages. 23 euros.

"It was twice Arthur": heavy

Black, sweat and tears ... Whether you like boxing or not, "It was twice Arthur" will shake you. The album offers a sort of cross portrait, an improbable meeting between two men, two exceptional destinies, which really existed in the early twentieth century. In the right corner, Jack Johnson first black to become heavyweight world champion, a flamboyant and a rebel. In the left corner, Arthur Cravan, poet and white boxer, provocative at heart, king of scandal. An album all in black and white and in punching drawings that leaves you knocked out.

"It was twice Arthur" , by Antico and Carlé. Ed. Dupuis. 184 pages. 28.95 euros.

"Le Loup", at the top

An ode to the mountains, to nature and more simply to life, "Le loup" by Jean-Marc Rochette, takes you into the Ecrins massif in the heart of the Alps. There lives Gaspard, a loner, almost from another time, surrounded by his sheep. There also lives the wolf, which panics and attacks its flock. Between the shepherd and the beast, the fight will be deadly. And will make an orphan: a young cub who also becomes, little by little, a threat as much as a companion. A vertiginous album, all in grace and humanism.

"Le Loup" , by Jean-Marc Rochette, Ed. Casterman. 112 pages. 18 euros.

Well seen "Sherlock Holmes"!

Good old-fashioned thriller but full of discoveries! "In the head of Sherlock Holmes" has everything, in terms of the script, from a classic investigation of the famous detective. And that's already a lot: nothing less obvious than finding the style and the relentless mechanics of Conan Doyle. But the album surprises above all with its bold graphics that really take you inside Sherlock's brain, sometimes even confusing you. A little treat to taste of course while drinking an Earl Gray, by the fire.

"In the head of Sherlock Holmes, volume I" , of Cyril Liéron and. Benoît Dahan. Ed. Ankama. 48 pages. 14.90 euros.
