The sofa at home has been fairly worn out over the years. To ensure that you continue to take a seat on it, it must be cleaned regularly.

The meal is eaten on the sofa, the cat likes to sit on it and the offspring frolic on it. Food residues, animal hair as well as drink or even urine stains cannot be avoided.

But that's not why a new couch is needed. We will show you how to make the sofa look like new again with simple home remedies .

Cleaning the sofa: This is how the upholstery is cleaned with baking soda

The well-known household remedy baking soda will master many stains on upholstered furniture, especially made of woven fabric . You can choose whether you prefer to clean the sofa wet or dry . The latter works very simply: you simply sprinkle baking soda over the affected areas on the upholstery and leave it there overnight. The next day you suck off the baking soda and the stains are gone.

For wet cleaning, however, dip a sponge in heated water and sprinkle the baking soda over it . Then carefully rub the powder into the upholstery of the couch. Then wait until the baking soda has dried before vacuuming it again.

You can get stubborn stains with a special mixture: three tablespoons of baking soda and two tablespoons of water are mixed into a paste and rubbed on the residues with a spoon. Then let it dry. Finally, the paste is also removed with a vacuum cleaner.

By the way, baking soda has great side effects : it neutralizes unpleasant odors in the upholstery, disinfects and declares dust mites to fight.

Clean the sofa with washing powder

Cleaning with washing powder is similar to that with baking soda. Put some of this on a sponge dipped in lukewarm water and rub the stains on the couch. However, do not use too much of the powder so that you can then rinse it out of the fabric with water. Otherwise you will still get white spots on the sofa - and the cleaning can start again!

Instead of baking soda and washing powder, baking powder is a good choice. In contrast to baking soda, baking soda is somewhat finer, which is why you should handle it in doses. It is particularly suitable for spot cleaning and no large-area cleaning. To do this, sprinkle some of it on the stain and moisten it with lukewarm water. After it has dried, it is suctioned off.

How to clean the sofa with shaving cream

Shaving cream is not necessarily the classic cleaning agent, but it can also remove stains from the upholstery - you should only keep it away from leather. Before use, vacuum the couch thoroughly and then spray the foam on the affected area. After ten minutes of exposure, brush the shaving foam with a soft brush in the direction of the fibers - until the stains are gone.

Then you should spray the entire sofa with shaving cream and let it work for about five minutes. This will prevent water spots from appearing on the surface afterwards. Finally, the entire sofa is brushed off or rubbed off with a damp cloth. However, do not use too much water so that the couch is not soaked.

How do I remove greasy stains from a microfiber sofa?

If there are slight stains on microfibre fabrics, you can first process them with a brush or a sponge. Then clean the couch with distilled water - you can optionally add a little gall soap to enhance the effect. Then wipe off the soap with distilled water. First, however, make sure that cleaning with water is recommended according to the manufacturer's instructions. In general, you should only use a little moisture - that's why a sponge or a slightly damp cloth is suitable for applying the distilled water.

For heavy soiling and greasy stains, use the window cleaner as it works well against grease. However, first try the cleaner on an inconspicuous area to see whether the agent has an effect on the surface. If you're satisfied with the result, you're good to go: spray the greasy stains and work on them with a medium-hard brush. Then wipe over it with distilled water and let it dry. You can repeat this process up to twice, then the spots should be gone. Use the brush to bring the microfibre back into shape and then let the whole thing dry out well.

Can I use a steam cleaner to clean the sofa?

As a rule, it is possible to clean the sofa with a steam cleaner. However, you should always pay attention to the manufacturer's instructions for use : Is the material robust enough? What temperatures can it withstand? Sometimes, for example, microfibre is not advised to use steam cleaner. In general, it is important that the fabric is insensitive to temperature and that the amount of steam and the temperature of the steam cleaner can be reduced. It also protects the surface of the couch when you use a fabric-coated steam wand .

When using it, you should also take care not to work the upholstered furniture with the steam for too long. Although this kills more mites, the reverse is that the upholstery is soaked so that it is difficult to dry. In the end, this gives the mites an even better basis for survival. So use the steam sparingly and do not use temperatures that are too hot .

Urine on the sofa: you can do that

With children or pets in the household, something can go wrong. But sit in, you definitely don't want to get into the mishap - not to mention the smell. As an immediate measure, first place kitchen paper on the urine stain so that the moisture is absorbed. Then sprinkle salt over it so that the remaining urine is sucked out of the sofa. After five to ten minutes, simply suck the salt off or wipe it off with a rag.

To neutralize the smell afterwards, simply use baking soda as described above. Simply spread the powder on the couch, leave to work for an hour and then vacuum.
