The rent strike during the coronavirus emergency. While various petitions have been launched at the state and regional level to ask for the stop of mortgage payments, the tenants organize themselves and think about 'crossing' their arms and not paying.
Coronavirus has caused millions of jobs to be lost and, without pay, 40 million Americans living on rent ask to cancel payments in the months of the emergency. A request that has so far fallen on deaf ears with the owners who, in some cases, have limited themselves to granting only one month's rent postponement, perhaps two in the event that the crisis continues. But the concession does not satisfy and hence the raising of shields with tenants on a war footing asking for the cancellation of rents and mortgages for one or two months, or the time needed to get back on their feet after the crisis.
The home owners, however, are not there and warn: if the rents are not paid, the risk is that of triggering the same vicious circle of 2008, with default of chain payments. The National Rental Home Association, an organization that represents some categories of home owners, therefore asks the government for help: it takes 9-10 billion dollars a month to balance the costs of renters who can no longer afford the rent. However, Congress appears more interested in helping tenants: California Democrat MP Maxine Waters proposes a $ 100 billion plan to cover Americans' rents and bills.
The ball is now in the White House, which has the task of seeking a balance between the two requests.
