(ANSA) - BANGKOK, APRIL 24 - The capital of the Philippines, Manila (13 million inhabitants), will be in total lockdown for the coronavirus for at least another two weeks, until May 15.
This was announced today by the spokesperson of President RodrigoDuterte, extending the full forty-year period that began in the second half of March to almost eight weeks.
The Philippines currently has 7,192 infections and 477 deaths, only about 72,000 swabs have been carried out, and the same government believes that only a quarter of the actual infections have been tested.
Duterte's decision will probably be adopted by the local authorities of other provinces of the archipelago, as happened with the measures taken so far. The country's airlines have also previously announced that domestic and international flights will be canceled until mid-May. However, the president's spokesman added that in the next few days there will be a progressive reopening of areas with low density of contagions.
