The consumer magazine Ökotest tested 400 toothpastes - with a frightening result. If you use the following toothpastes, you are on the safe side.

The consumer magazine Ökotest tested 400 toothpastes - with a frightening result. If you use the following toothpastes, you are on the safe side.

Anyone standing in front of the dental care shelf in the drugstore is overwhelmed at first: You are spoiled for choice between countless toothpastes, all of which promise perfectly groomed teeth. But many of the toothpastes disappoint in the test or are even dangerous, warns Ökotest.

The five best toothpastes - and the losers in toothpaste comparison

The independent consumer protection magazine Ökotest examined a total of 400 toothpastes from discounters, drugstores, supermarkets, pharmacies and online shops and checked them for the effectiveness of the ingredients and caries protection. The sobering result: Only every third toothpaste is recommended , as Ökotest reports.

Natural cosmetics in particular would have disappointed in the test, sobering conclusion. A total of 199 products scored "poor" or "insufficient". 58 toothpastes were rated "satisfactory" or "sufficient" and only 27 products scored "good". After all, Ökotest would recommend 116 products without any restrictions because they contain no controversial ingredients .

The following toothpastes scored among the "very good" :

  • Alverde 5 in 1 toothpaste Nanaminze
  • Alviana organic peppermint toothpaste
  • Salviagalen F Madaus with fluoride toothpaste
  • Parodontax Extra Fresh
  • Dentabella 4 herbs

Five of the worst rated toothpastes :

  • Signal toothpaste caries protection
  • Odol-Med 3 Extreme Clean Long-term freshness
  • Odol-Med 3 Night Repair + Whitening toothpaste
  • Blend-A-Med 3D White Vitalizing Fresh
  • Theramed 2 in 1 toothpaste + original mouthwash

Natural cosmetics: Too little fluoride in toothpaste

What all toothpastes rated "good" and "very good" have in common: They all contain fluoride . This ingredient in toothpastes has been proven to prevent tooth decay and is therefore also recommended in the guidelines of the German Society for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for caries prevention for permanent teeth for dental care.

Especially in natural cosmetics, there is often little or no fluoride. This also explains the poor performance of these products: 51 out of 65 natural cosmetic toothpastes scored no better than "poor" because they do not offer adequate protection against caries due to the lack of fluoride.

Foaming agent to PEG: harmful ingredients in toothpaste

Not only is the lack of fluoride, but the aggressive foaming agent sodium lauryl sulfate in toothpastes also damages teeth and oral flora. Many of the products tested also contained polyethylene glycols and chemically related substances (PEG), which are said to make the mucous membranes more permeable to potentially harmful foreign substances. Even the ingredient triclosan, which is suspected of promoting antibiotic resistance, has been detected. Triclosan is contained in four toothpastes :

  • Colgate Total Original Toothpaste
  • Colgate Total plus healthy fresh toothpaste
  • Colgate Total plus interdental cleaning toothpaste
  • Fuchs Dent-A-Xyl toothpaste
