British animal rights activists rescued a stranded dolphin in a difficult five hour mission in Cornwall. The animal was found in the shallow water of a river near the small town of Helston - about three miles from the open sea. This is reported by the Guardian, among others.

The area in the south-west of England is therefore notorious for the fact that many dolphins get stuck there in muddy shallows. According to a report in a local newspaper, the dolphin was discovered by a construction worker who first tried to bring the animal into the deeper water himself. When that didn't work, the man called animal welfare for help.

To get to the helpless animal, the rescuers from British Divers Marine Life Rescue had to crawl over and under many fallen trees on the riverbank. They briefly brought the exhausted marine mammal ashore for a thorough examination. He must have been stuck all night and under great stress.

Finally, according to reports, animal rights activists were able to bring the animal back into the sea with the help of a small boat. Except for a wound over one eye, he was not injured. The rescuers were able to watch the dolphin swim in the open sea.
