Cologne (dpa / tmn) - Hot days are a burden, especially for older people. The Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) explains how they can get through the heat.

It is important to drink enough: ideally at least two to three liters spread over the day, preferably water, unsweetened herbal tea or juice spritzers. Another tip: place drinks in several places in the apartment and have an acoustic signal - such as a short beep - remind you to have a drink.

According to the BZgA, sweating as a natural cooling process is less pronounced in older people in particular. In addition, the feeling of thirst often diminishes with age, and dehydration occurs more quickly. Once the body is dehydrated, older people need significantly longer to recover.

This is why the experts also advise running errands in the morning and staying in the shade or in cooler places. Light clothing and pouring water provide cooling. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, shortness of breath or high temperature, you should see your doctor.
