TRIBUTE - Struck down by a heart attack at age 79, this Magnum photoreporter leaves a human continent of images and travel, his state of the world.

He was courtesy, elegance, good upbringing embodied.

And, as soon as he spoke of his work, we discovered an adventurer in the sense of Monfreid or Saint-Exupéry, a free man who loved the landscapes of Africa and Brazil, the impossible trips to Communist China or to Egypt during the bombing of Suez.

He had seen closely the wars, in Nigeria, in Biafra, the revolutions, May 68 of which he was the great witness.

His offbeat humor shines through from his first black and white shots, in his series “

The Italians

”, atypical in his work, but which says a lot about his gaze.

General de Gaulle, friend of his grandfather, General Clément-Grandcourt, had asked him to accompany him to Poland.

He had taken famous photos in Paris, on the day of de Gaulle's death, November 9, 1970. Some came out for the anniversary - the very day Bruno Barbey was brutally struck down by a heart attack, as a tribute to the destiny.
