“We want to make the protests less stressful, full of creative ideas that show that we really like to protest in peace and that we don't want violence,” says Rattikarn Saehor, a young soap bubble machine saleswoman.

According to Sam, a 30-year-old protester, the ducks helped the movement win the image war against the authorities.

“We have some nice ducks to fight against a fully armed police force, and it shows that we are the best,” he explains.

This is not the first time that the yellow duck has been used as a sign of challenge and protest.

In 2013, the 16m high inflatable duck by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman floated in Hong Kong harbor during the Umbrella Revolution.
